Mr. Robert Lester Spillman, 82, of Advance passed away Wednesday, September 26, 2012 at his home. He was born December 20, 1929 in Rowan County to Thomas Lester and Edna Barney Spillman. Mr. Spillman served in the U.S. Army as a military police during the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged in 1953. After returning home, he started his own brick masonry business and also built and owned various other businesses throughout his life. He retired from his masonry business while in his 60's. His hobby was restoring old cars and he restored many in his lifetime. He also enjoyed NASCAR racing. Mr. Spillman loved telling stories of his life and being around his friends and family. His family was the love of his life and he was a terrific father, grandfather and great grandfather. He will be missed by all who loved him. Mr. Spillman was preceded in death by his wife, Maxine Armsworthy Spillman; two brothers, Jack and Tommy Spillman and two sisters, Helen Spillman and Lucy Mae Myers. He is survived by a daughter, Toni Spillman Ireland of Advance; two granddaughters, Robbie Tedder and husband Chris and Lea Ireland York and husband Aaron; three great grandchildren, Ashley Tedder, Logan Miller and Chloe Tedder; two brothers, Kenny Spillman and Ray Spillman and two sisters, Sharon Haneline and Betty Jean Brooks. A memorial service will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, September 29, 2012 at Bethlehem United Methodist Church with Dr. Barry Lemons and Rev. Don Routh officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.
