Robert Glenn Smith, 94, of Winston-Salem, died Tuesday, June 30, 2009 at the Forrest Heights Assisted Living Center. He was born October 22, 1914 in Forsyth County, a son of the late William C. and Hattie Spaugh Smith. He was a very active, devoted and oldest member of Grace Baptist Temple. He was a retired foreman from Hanes Hosiery with 43 years of service. Mr. Smith was a veteran of World War II serving with the United States Army in the European Theatre where he was awarded two Purple Hearts. Mr. Smith was also an avid golfer. He was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma Sowers Smith in 2006; three brothers and two sisters. Surviving are four sisters-in-law, Hazel Smith of East Bend, Bernice Mabe of Raleigh, Peggy Jeffords of Winston-Salem, and Dorothy Ketner of Winston-Salem who was his devoted caregiver; and several nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 3 at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens with Pastor Ed Sears officiating. There will be no formal visitation, but friends may come by Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel anytime after 1:00 p.m. Thursday.
