Robert Duncan Sipprell, Sr, age 96, died peacefully on Wednesday, October 15, 2008 at Bermuda Village Health Center. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. A native of Western New York, Bob was born in Orchard Park, NY on December 30, 1911 to the late Henry V. Sipprell and Martha Anderson Bonnar Sipprell. He graduated from Ohio State University (class of 1936) where he met his loving wife, Mary Ellen Weaver, with whom he shared 70 wonderful years. Bob started his career in 1938 as a city planner in Buffalo, NY, becoming the Executive Director of the Buffalo Housing Authority from 1948 - 1966. He left Buffalo to become the Executive Director of the Rochester, NY Housing Authority and returned to Buffalo in 1971 to serve as the local Executive for the NY State Urban Development Corporation. Following retirement in 1976, Bob and Mary Ellen moved to Sanibel Island, FL where they spent 22 years enjoying the beaches and collecting shells before coming to Bermuda Village in 1998. Bob was a licensed Landscape Architect in the Sate of New York. He served on numerous boards and Advisory committees supporting public housing and was Executive Officer of the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials. Bob was a life member of Delta Upsilon Fraternity, past member of Lions Club, and Gyro Club of Buffalo. He was a member of Clemmons Presbyterian Church where mission work was his passion. He was always active in his communities, giving generously of his time and talent to better those less fortunate. In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by four brothers, Sherwood B. Sipprell, William H. Sipprell, George G. Sipprell, Donald D. Sipprell and a sister, Martha B. Sipprell. In addition to his wife, he is survived by daughter Susan R. Pfau and husband Donald of Garberville, CA, son Robert D. Sipprell, JR and wife Drinda of Clemmons, son Scott W. Sipprell and wife Rebecca of Washington, NC, brother Raymond F. Sipprell of Stuart, FL, sister Charlotte F. Bates of Tampa, FL, seven grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, October 18, 2008 at Bermuda Village in Advance. The family will receive friends following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Clemmons Presbyterian Church Mission Fund, 3930 Clemmons Rd., Clemmons, NC 27012. Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel is serving the family.
