Robert Prout

Robert Prout, Sr., died Sunday, March 25, 2012, at the age of 91 in Forsyth Medical Center. He was born on Sept. 2, 1920, in Albany, N.Y., to the late Thomas Prout and Anna Johnston. Mr. Prout was particularly proud of his service with the U.S, Marine Corps during World War II. He joined in 1942 and was discharged in 1945. He was awarded a Purple Heart for injuries sustained aboard the USS Betelguese during the Battle of Guadalcanal. After he returned from the war, he married the love of his life, Camilla Della Rocco, on May 27, 1947. They were together for 45 years, until her death in 1992. Mr. Prout moved to Winston-Salem with his family in 1967, and he and his wife became ""Pa"" and ""Ma"" to a generation of children in their neighborhood. He had an aptitude for numbers, facts and how things came together that served him well on his job as a technical writer, designing and writing technical documentation for the Bell Telephone System. He retired from Western Electric in 1981 after 40 years and six months of service. Mr. Prout is survived by his son, Robert Patrick Prout of Greensboro, and his wife, Teresa Prout; and his daughter, Anne Prout Morehead of Winston-Salem and her husband, John M. Morehead Sr. He has three grandsons, Brian Prout and Ross Prout, both of Greensboro, and John Morehead Jr. of Charlotte. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his older brother, Thomas Prout. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Disabled American Veterans, 251 N. Main St., #115, Winston-Salem, NC 27101.
