Robert Dockery Parks

Mr. Robert (Bob) Dockery Parks, age 93, died Saturday, May 28, 2011 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born in Wilkes County on November 5, 1917 and was preceded in death by his parents and his wife of 60 years, Hilda White Parks as well as three brothers and a sister. He is survived by his son, Larry Robert Parks of Winston-Salem and a sister, Mary P. Keen of Kenosha, Wisconsin. He attended Berea College in Berea, Kentucky for two years prior to entering military service where he served three and a half years. Two and a half of those years he was in the European Theater. Following the military service, he was employed for 34 years by the Veterans Administration. His last capacity at the VA was that of rating board specialist. Mr. Parks was a member of Burkhead United Methodist Church for over 60 years and faithfully served in many capacities during that time. His greatest loves were his family and his God. He often said that he loved everybody and met few people during his lifetime that he didn't like. He said that a life of doing the right thing was the wisest course a person could follow and would result in few regrets. His hobbies were woodworking and gardening. He was an avid fan of the Atlanta Braves and the North Carolina Tar Heels basketball team. The Rev. Kathie Sherrill will conduct the funeral services on Wednesday, June 1, 2011 at 11 AM at Burkhead United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel on Tuesday, May 31, 2011 from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM.
