Robert Anthony O’Neill (Bob), 78, of Clemmons, NC transitioned peacefully in his home on Sunday, August 27, 2023, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. Bob spent his final days surrounded by his loving wife and family, his dog Shandy and gracious Hospice nurses.
Bob was born on November 3, 1944, in Alexandria, VA. He was preceded in death by his parents, Perry and Marion Hibbard and his brother James Sydney O’Neill (Jim). He was survived by his wife of 45 years, Carolyn Blizard Sheets O’Neill, two children; Shane and Erin, and two grandchildren; Ryan and Kelsey.
He was blessed with a loving and supportive family; Jimmy and Betty Sheets, Debbie McHone (Frank), Ronda McBride (Alex), Scott Sheets (Kelly), Daniel Scearce (Byron), Ginger Blizard and Charlotte Damrow. He had twelve nieces, fourteen nephews, and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Bob’s life was full, from his hobbies to his career. He was an avid tennis player and golfer. Bob was a graduate of Benjamin Franklin University in Washington, D.C. He was a CPA in the Washington area before transitioning to the land development and hotel management firm with Maryland Community Developers. He served as general manager for both the Sheraton and Ramada, simultaneously. During his time in hotel management, he befriended countless celebrities, his favorites being Elvis, Muhammad Ali, Electric Light Orchestra, race car driver Janet Guthrie and 1977 Miss America, Dorothy Benham.
After moving to Hilton Head Island, SC, Bob became the director of tennis operations for the Rod Laver Tennis Center. He and Laver became lifelong friends. He was later promoted to director of Resort Operations for Palmetto Dunes. He spent the remainder of his career with Greenwood Development assuming total operations of the award-winning facility until his retirement.
He will be greatly missed by those who knew him, but is whole again in his heavenly home.
A funeral service will be held at Canaan United Methodist Church at 11:00 AM, on Saturday, September 9, 2023. The family will receive friends from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM on Friday, September 8, 2023 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Memorials may be made to Kate B. Reynolds Hospice House 101 Hospice Ln.
