Robert Frank McDaniel, 90, of Winston-Salem quietly left his family as he slept the morning of January 21, 2009 at the Kate Bitting Reynolds Hospice Home, just one week before his 91st birthday - a day he was anticipating. Robert was born January 28, 1918 to Ernest Floyd (Peter) and Dora Long McDaniel in Clemmons. The family later moved to a southern Forsyth County neighborhood where Robert met Grace Long. They were married January 15, 1941. Robert worked hard and was a good provider for his family. One of his first occupations was as a dough maker for Merita Bakery. The pay was 35 cents an hour. He was not allowed to quit to find a better paying job - bread was a necessary product and there were so few men to hire due to the military draft. In 1947, the family moved to Florida where he built farm equipment for Pendry's Farm Machinery Company. When they returned home, Robert began work as a carpenter for the Frank Blum Company, and later for the Norman Dancy Construction Company. One of the big projects he helped build was the Coliseum. Robert always enjoyed being outdoors and hunting and fishing. Before his retirement, he and Grace built a cabin near the Parkway in Virginia. They often had chicken stews and invited their ""mountain neighbors"" and their family from ""home"". They enjoyed all spring, summer and fall seasons on the mountain until Grace's illness and her death in April 1988. Robert was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Grace; a brother and sister-in-law, Howard and Mildred McDaniel; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Lula and Wade Gabard and Maude and Fred Nifong. He is survived by a brother, Ralph (Doris) McDaniel; a daughter, Rebecca Jane Mathis; two sons, William Franklin McDaniel and Thomas Steven (Linda) McDaniel; and a stepson, Robert (Peggy) Williams. He is also survived by ten grandchildren, Tammy Goins, Mark Christian Willard, Stacey Mathis, Daymon Mathis, Jerry McDaniel, Glenn McDaniel, Suzanne Clodfelter, Sandra Scott, Sherri Saltz and Jeff Williams; twenty great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; and many nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Friday, January 23 at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Tommy Albertson officiating. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorials be made to Hospice and Palliative Care Center, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. The family is grateful for the care Robert received while at Hospice and earlier at Forsyth Medical Center. Online condolences may be made at www.hayworth-miller.com
