Robert William Howell

HOWELL Kernersville - Robert William Howell passed away on December 30, 2012 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was the son of Welsh parents, the late Roger and Della Thomas Howell. Robert Howell was born on December 12, 1924 in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving and devoted wife of 62 years, LaVerne Walters Howell, his brother, Roger Howell and wife, Ann, and his niece, Karen Howell Sevast and husband, Bill. Mr. Howell graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point, NY in 1949 and received his Master of Business Administration from the University of North Dakota in 1967. He was a retired Air Force pilot and was a veteran of World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and Bronze Star Medal with V as well as several Air Medals for his heroic service to our country. He served on the faculty of the Air Command and Staff College at Maxwell Air Force Base, was a Launch Crew Commander for the Minuteman ICBM at Minot Air Force Base, and served as an advisor to the Republic of Vietnam Air Force in Saigon, South Vietnam. After his retirement from the Air Force, he worked as an industrial sales engineer for Honeywell Corporation in Charlotte, NC and for Applied Engineering in Greensboro, NC. Mr. Howell was a very spiritual person and was actively involved as a Deacon and with other activities with Carmel Presbyterian Church in Charlotte, NC and with First Presbyterian Church in Kernersville, NC. He was an avid golfer and jogger. He is survived by his two daughters, Linda Howell Childers and husband, David, and, Susan Howell Jayson and husband, Linc, one grandson, Robert Childers and wife, Kristy, and three granddaughters, Meghan Childers Elting and husband, Robbie, Valerie Jayson Cothran and husband, Drew, and Jennifer Jayson McGowen and husband, Davis, and two great-grandchildren, Ada McGowen and Thomas McGowen. He is also survived by his two nephews, Roger Howell and wife, Renee, Craig Howell and wife, Caryn, and several great-nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, January 19, 2013 at First Presbyterian Church in Kernersville. Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church 611 Oak Hurst Street Kernersville, NC 27284.
