Mr. Robert Douglas Howell, 87, went to be with the Lord Thursday, August 11, 2016 while resting at home surrounded by his family. He was born May 27, 1929 in Oakland County, TN to the late Annie Bell Davis Howell and Robert H. Howell. While in school, Mr. Howell enjoyed baseball, football, and being in ROTC and the Honor Society. He proudly served his country as a Staff Sergeant in the United States Air Force. Mr. Howell graduated from the University of Tennessee, then in 1956, moved to Winston-Salem. In 1989, he retired from the Winston-Salem Journal. Mr. Howell enjoyed gardening and shopping. He was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Stanleyville, where he served on the Crusaders Care Team. Mr. Howell was a devoted father, Papa, brother, friend, and confidant. He taught his family to be strong, positive, put God first and hold family close. His family took comfort in knowing that a special someone was always in their corner. Mr. Howell's wisdom, gentle hand, and storytelling will be greatly missed. In addition to his parents, Mr. Howell was preceded in death by his wives: Margaret Lehman, Shirley Plunkett, and Janie McKnight; and one sister, JoAnn Howell. He is survived by his siblings: Doris Howell (Keaton Thompson), Rose Marie Howell, Frank Bryant Howell (Emmogene), Richard Howell (Barbara), and Ronald Howell (Heroko); daughter, Sue Ellen Liner (Warren); stepchildren: Shirley Phelps, Allen Phelps, Melinda Craver (David), and David McKnight (Brenda); grandchildren: Laura Edwards Holdaway (Chris Phillips), Peter Cain (Amy), and Christina Edwards Carrier (Nathan); and great-grandchildren: Brittany, Sandy, Jennifer, Wesley, Jessica, Abby, Andrea, Mary Beth, Madison, Branden, and Melaney. A funeral service will be conducted 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, August 16, at First Baptist Church of Stanleyville with Pastor Eddie Honeycutt, Pastor T. Welch, and Minister Peter Cain officiating. Burial will follow at Salem Cemetery with military honors provided by District 11 VFW Memorial Honor Guard.
