Robert A. Harrington of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, died suddenly on Tuesday, March 30, 2021. He was 73 years old.
Born on October 5, 1947, in Baltimore, MD, to Robert N. Harrington and Suzie Mattox, he was the elder of two children. His youth was spent traveling the country and the world as his father served in the US Army. These adventures brought him from the East coast to Germany and Alaska; and they stoked his lifelong love of travel and adventure. He received his bachelor’s degree from Eastern Carolina University in 1969. Through the years, he held many positions and took great pride in all of his professional work. The roles he was most proud of and most eager to talk about were those of father, grandfather and husband.
In 2019 Bob married the love of his life, Kathy Solarino. Together they filled their days with joy, fun, and happiness. They shared a love of life, family, and friendships; and they lived every day to its fullest. They truly brought out the best in each other.
His life centered on his family and his greatest source of pride were his children and grandchildren. He cherished his time with them, cheering them on in sports, encouraging them in all they did and imparting his wisdom for all of the challenges life might present them with. Retirement presented him with the chance to spend his time doing the things he most loved to do with those he loved doing them with. He had friendships in countless zip codes and was truly the most warm and loving person you could ever hope to meet.
He also was the greatest dad we could have ever hoped for and while our hearts are broken, we are so thankful to have been able to call him ours. We will miss him every day for the rest of our lives, but we will always smile when we think of him or tell our kids and grandkids all about him.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife Kathy, his sister Dale Harrington and her husband Joe Quinn, his son Noel and his wife Synnoeve, and his son Donald and his wife Elizabeth. He also leaves his precious grandchildren: Liv, Amelia, Olav and Rylan. His niece Susan Dockery and her husband Marvin Smith and his nephew Josh Dockery and his wife Grace. He also leaves behind beloved members of the Solarino family: Jason, Andréa, Alan, Audrey, David and their children: Sophia, Tommy, Laura, Rhett and Lyla.
A Celebration of Life will be held on April 24, 2021 beginning at 1pm at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Fellowship Hall, 357 Old Hollow Rd, Winston Salem, NC.
