WINSTON-SALEM, NC-Mr. Robert Francis Flynn, age 87, longtime Winston-Salem, NC resident, passed away on April 19, 2015 in Raleigh, NC. Born May 24, 1927 in East Orange, New Jersey, he was the only son of the late Francis P. Flynn and Florence Marie Barrett Flynn. Robert retired in 1987 after 37 years as a senior engineer with AT&T in Burlington, NC. He was a veteran of the Navy, a Seton Hall College graduate and earned a master's degree from Columbia University. Robert's favorite thing in the world was spending time with his family. He was always keeping track of what everyone was doing through emails, phone calls and visits. Any time people were coming to his home they could count on a delicious home cooked meal. He loved playing cards with his family and friends with bridge being a lifetime favorite activity. He often said he could play all night. He especially enjoyed teaching his grandchildren how to play bridge and admired their skills as they developed over the years, often debating the proper bidding strategies with them. He was also fond of the card game Hand and Foot, and even enjoyed playing the game in his final days. Robert was a very active volunteer as a longtime member of St. Leo's Catholic Church in Winston-Salem, NC. He especially loved the role of lector during Mass, washing the linens, and counting the weekly collection. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and also volunteered for many years as a Meals on Wheels driver. In addition to his parents, Robert was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Mildred Louise Watson Flynn; beloved daughter, Robin Louise Flynn and infant sister, Mary Patricia Flynn. Robert is survived by his children, Mark Flynn and wife, Elizabeth ""Bizz"" Andersen of Cary, NC, Scott Flynn and wife, Belinda of Fuquay Varina, NC, and Mary Hammond and husband, Kenneth of Medway, MA; three grandchildren, Ryan Hammond, Robin Hammond, Emily Hammond; four step-grandchildren, Christopher ""C.J."" Soques and wife, Stephanie, Daniel ""Danny"" Soques and wife, Brittany, Erik Andersen and wife, Ryoko, and Gregory Andersen; sisters-in-law, Ruth Boone and Irene Watson; brother-in-law, Robert Watson; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. A memorial mass will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, April 27, 2015 at St. Leo's Catholic Church with Fr. Brian J. Cook officiating. Inurnment will follow in the church columbarium. The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm on Sunday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. The family would like to thank the supportive staff at Preston Pointe retirement community in Morrisville, NC and the wonderful caregivers at Rex Hospital in Raleigh, NC.
