Robert Phillips Eversmann

Robert Phillips Eversmann, most recently from Winston-Salem, NC entered eternal rest on December 12, 2023, after a brief illness.  He was a beloved husband, father, uncle, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend.

Robert was born on July 12, 1932, in Baldwin, New York to Herbert and Margaret (Phillips) Eversmann and, with his older sister Jane, grew up in Baldwin, New York on Long Island.  He attended the Valley Forge Military Academy preparatory school in Wayne, PA and graduated from the University of Virginia in 1954.

As a commissioned Second Lieutenant in the US Army (Infantry) and, while awaiting his initial posting, Robert married Nancy Stine on April 16, 1955.  They were happily married for over 65 years until she preceded him in death in November 2020.

Following military service in Germany, they settled in Bay Shore, New York and raised a family until moves over the years brought them to Virginia, Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina.

His civilian career was long and varied: a stockbroker beginning on Wall Street, a banker with United Virginia Bank, a cattle farmer, a member of the staff of Washington & Lee University, and an entrepreneur who owned and operated the Natural Bridge Lumber Company.  As he settled into semi-retirement, he was a civilian-employee at Fort Benning, GA.

He was very much his “own man” who followed his heart and always scanned the horizon beyond the day-to-day bustle of the “Rat Race.”  He was an accomplished golfer, an avid boater, a lover of watching our National Pastime, and with his family’s efforts, built their country home Sun Dance Farm in Natural Bridge, VA.  We are gladdened by his life, Christian Faith, and wholesome living of a good long life.

Robert is survived by four children: Amy Nash (Ed) of Corpus Christi, TX, Timothy Eversmann (Kim) of Winston-Salem, NC; Christopher Eversmann (Jill) of Columbia, SC; and Matthew Eversmann (Victoria) of West Palm Beach, FL in addition to nine grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

Robert was a member of Anglican Cathedral Church of the Epiphany in Columbia, SC.
