Mr. Robert Ray Crews, Sr., 91, passed away on September 16, 2023, peacefully at his home after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. He was born on September 18, 1931, in Forsyth County to the late Charlie Abraham Crews and Minnie Mae Snipes Crews. Robert proudly served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict for seven years, including two tours to Korea. He worked for R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. with 32 years’ service before retiring. In addition, he served on the Mineral Springs Fire Department Board for 20 Years. Robert enjoyed listening to bluegrass music, dancing, watching Nascar racing, and collecting records. Most of all, he loved spending time attending cookouts with his family. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sons: Robert “Bob” R. Crews, Jr. and Sheldon L. Crews; one brother, J.C. “Tom” Crews. Robert is survived by Freada, his loving wife of almost 70 years; one sister, Elsie C. Moss; three daughters: Marlo Spainhour (David), Tena Phelps (Tim), and Kathy Gilbert (Wayne); 9 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; several step grandchildren, step great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be conducted 2:00 PM Wednesday, September 20, 2023, at Hayworth-Miller Rural Hall Chapel with Pastor Mitchell See officiating. Interment will follow at Gardens of Memory in Walkertown. The family will receive friends on Wednesday at 1:00 PM at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Alzheimer's Foundation of America, 322 8th Avenue, 16th Floor, New York, NY 10001.
