Robert 'Bob' Gentry Carroll

Mr. Robert Gentry Carroll (Bob) Stokes County Author and Historian, died on Tuesday, March 6, 2012 at Fitzgerald Health Center at Arbor Acres at the age of 104. He was born on February 1, 1908 in Winston-Salem, NC to Gaston Abram and Ella Gentry Carroll. He lived in the King area until he moved to Arbor Acres in 2000. Mr. Carroll graduated from King High School in 1929 and attended Guilford College. He was a farmer, prepared income taxes and retired in 1975 as Stokes County Tax Collector. He wrote a column for the Danbury Reporter ""Old, Odd and Other Stuff"" for 27 years. He loved Stokes County, its people and its history. His keen interest in local history and genealogy is clearly illustrated in his columns. He took great pleasure in helping others compile their family trees. Mr. Carroll contributed articles to the Stokes County Heritage Volume I and II. He wrote a history of Mt. Olive Baptist Church and also ""100 years of King 1888-1988"". He wrote a documentary account of the Old Mt. Olive Graveyard and also the Ferguson Graveyard researching the people buried there and their families. He recently published two books compiled of articles from his column in the Danbury Reporter, Stokes County Old, Odd and Other Stuff, Volume I and II. He was a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church in King for over 60 years. He sang in the choir for 50 years and taught the Men's Sunday School class for 30 years. In addition to his parents Mr. Carroll was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Ruth Bennett Carroll, a brother; R.G. (Jack) Carroll and a sister; Ruth Ahrens. He is survived by one daughter; Cecilia (Mike) King of Pinnacle. Four grandchildren: Chad (Amber) Browder of Lewisville, Klista Browder of Winston-Salem, Valerie (Lee) Wooten of East Bend and Dustin Overby of King. Three great-grandchildren: Zachary, Hunter and Trey Wooten all of East Bend. One brother, O.G. (Pete) Carroll of Dobson and sister-in-law, Janie Sizemore of King and also numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Mr. Carroll will be conducted Saturday morning, March 10, 2012 at 11:00 A.M. at Mt. Olive Baptist Church in King by Rev. Carl Goodman and Rev. Yates Wilkinson. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home in Rural Hall Friday evening March 9th from 7:00 until 9:00 P.M.
