Mr. Richard Joseph Whitworth, age 78, died Sunday, April 17, 2011 in the Hospice unit at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C. He had been in declining health for several years and resided the past six years in the home of Mrs. Ivan Cox, his sister. Richard, a Winston-Salem native, was born September 28, 1932 to John George Whitworth and Maggie Jane Rhoads Whitworth. The eldest son of eight children, he was educated in Forsyth County Schools. His strong work ethics began during his teen years when he left school to help support his family. Richard was hard-working, well-liked, had a great sense of humor, and did many good deeds, especially for the elderly. Employment through the years, include jobs at Zinzendorf Hotel, Robert E. Lee Hotel, N.C. Baptist Hospital, and R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company from which he retired. Subsequently, Richard worked for Wackenhut and Guardsmark Security. Proud to be an American, Richard served in the U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force, respectfully, and was honorably discharged. He was predeceased by his parents; brothers, Harry Whitworth, Steve Whitworth, and John Whitworth; sister, Kathryn Whitworth; and nephew, Bobby Cox.
He is survived by two sisters, Marvis Whitworth of East Bend and Edith Cox (Mrs. Ivan), and brother, Ernest Whitworth (Theresa) of Winston-Salem. Also by several nieces, nephews, cousins and two sisters-in-laws, Jeannine Whitworth and Mary Whitworth. As their great-uncle, Richard was especially fond of Heidi and Leanna Whitworth and their brother D.J. for the joy they brought into his life. A graveside service with military rites will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Thursday, April 21 at Forsyth Memorial Park with Rev. David Wood officiating. The family will receive friends from 6-8 this evening April 20, 2011 at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home in Rural Hall. The family of Mr. Whitworth wishes to express their appreciation to the doctors and nurses at Forsyth Medical Center for their compassionate efforts toward Richard during his illness.
