Mr. Richard “Ricky” Sydney Vernon, 65, of Mocksville, NC, passed away Saturday, September 10, 2022, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, in Winston-Salem, NC.

Ricky was born in Winston-Salem, NC, on January 9, 1957, to the late Roland and Mary Vernon.

He graduated from Parkland High School before continuing his education at Forsyth Technical Community College pursuing a degree in heating and air. He utilized his degree for 20 years working for Wake Forest Baptist Hospital where he was named “Red Duke”. He was able to create a family away from home with his co-workers at Baptist.

Ricky was a cowboy at heart and loved to rope and ride his beloved horse of many years, Bourbon.

Ricky was preceded in death by his parents, Roland and Mary Vernon; and his brother, David Vernon.

He is survived by his nephew, Tommy Williams; niece, Kayla Vernon; 1st cousins, Bill (Connie) Cockerham and Steve Vernon; and his best friend, AKA his “plan B”, Karen Lux, who strongly stood by him throughout his battles with cancer.

A memorial service will be held for Ricky at 5:00 PM on Saturday September 17, 2022, at Canaan United Methodist Church with Pastor Jay Bowers officiating. Along side of Pastor Bowers, Carolyn O’Neill and Monte Tuttle will be assisting with the choral.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Ln, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
