Richard Eugene Pope

Mr. Richard ""Dick"" Eugene Pope, 88, of Bermuda Run passed away Tuesday, July 27, 2010 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He was born October 24, 1921 in Forsyth County to Lonnie Eugene and Margaret Ebert Pope. Mr. Pope graduated from Griffith High School and Piedmont Bible College. He served in the Signal Corps division of the U.S. Air Force during World War II and remained an ardent patriot throughout his life. He opened Towne Jewelers on Liberty Street in Winston-Salem in 1955 and in 1975, moved the location to 4th Street. A second location opened in Stratford Oaks. Mr. Pope retired in 2002 and was the owner of Towne Jewelers for 57 years. He was a lifelong member of Salem Baptist Church. He served on the board of Piedmont Bible College where he was a longtime benefactor and supporter. Mr. Pope was an avid golfer and charter member of Bermuda Run Country Club. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Barbara Williamson Pope. Surviving is his wife, Carolyn McCullogh Pope; four step-children, Jan Callaway, Lisa Robinson, Jeff Robinson and wife Linda and Hollye Robinson and special friend, Von Everhart; four step-grandchildren; a brother, George Pope and wife Libby and three sisters, Margie Grimsley, Sylvia McClure and Joan York and husband Horace. A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday July 31, 2010 at Salem Baptist Church with Dr. Howard Wilburn and Dr. Charles Petitt officiating. Entombment will follow in Westlawn Gardens of Memory. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, July 30, 2010 at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Salem Baptist Church Building Fund, 429 Broad Street, Winston-Salem, NC 27101. Online condolences may be made to www.hayworth-miller.com.
