Richard Dean Phillips

ClemmonsMr. Richard D. Phillips, 84, of Clemmons, NC passed away on Friday, Sept. 2, 2011 at his home. He was born in Guilford County, NC on July 22, 1927 and was preceded in death by his mother, Lena R. Phillips. Mr. Phillips grew up in Yadkin County and graduated from Yadkinville High School in 1944. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and served aboard the USS Fort Marion (LSD-22) and the USS Bayfield (APA-33). Mr. Phillips was a letter carrier and retired from the U.S. Post Office in Winston-Salem after 27 years of service. He was a long time member of Union Ridge United Methodist Church. He is survived by his devoted wife of 62 years, Jean Phillips, of the home, and by his two sons, Richard D. (Dick) Phillips Jr. of Winston-Salem and Michael W. Phillips (Kathy) of Advance. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Brock Phillips and fiancée, Charlotte Yang, and Shana Wright (Andrew), all of Winston-Salem, and Lindsey Deitz (Dustin) of Asheville, NC. He is survived by three great-grandchildren, Olivia Deitz, Camille Deitz and Brent Wright. He is also survived by some very special cousins who cared deeply for him. He was a sweet and loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who will be missed dearly and remembered lovingly by his family. He was an honorable man. Funeral services will be held at Union Ridge United Methodist Church at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 5 with Pastor Gary Elrod presiding. Burial will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 4, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.
