It is with great sorrow to announce the passing of Richard J. Munson, age 81, on January 3, 2021. A cherished husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend. Richard was the rock of his family. Richard was a self made man. In 1963, he had a dream to open a business and established Munce’s Hot Dogs, Rahway, NJ. He was 24 years old with a wife and children and took a chance. 58 years later that business is an icon of his hometown. He pursued a new adventure in Cinnabon. Richard and Betty Lou moved to North Carolina and formed Cinnabon of the Carolinas. His success came with hard work and perseverance.
Richard touched many lives. He was the Chief of Civil Defense in Rahway, NJ. Exalted Ruler/Past Exalted Ruler of Elks 1075, Rahway, NJ. He was also a devoted member of his church, St. Mary’s of Rahway NJ and Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church, Winston Salem, NC.
Richard will be deeply missed by his wife, Betty Lou Munson, married 63 years; his children, Steven Munson and his wife, Susan Munson Chase, and Douglas Chase; grandchildren, Robert and Ashley Chase, Travis Chase and Christen Saunders, Dylan and Alicia Skripko, Dana and Ryan Fuller, Mathew Patton and Sophia Roberson; the light of his life, great grandchildren, Hunter Fuller and Eloise Chase; his sister Carole Trimboli; and brother James McGrath.
Richard is predeceased by his children, Scott Munson and Dianne Patton; his granddaughter, Sara Patton; his mother, Inga McGrath; brothers, Lance Munson, Bruce Munson; and lifelong friend Jerry DuBeau.
A Private Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church.
