Richard ""Dick"" Lowish, 85, died Tuesday, January 20, 2009 at his home at Vienna Village in Pfafftown. He was born in Shelburn, Indiana to the late Hershcel and Mary Lowish. He was preceded in death by Carolyn ""Kay"" Lowish, his wife of 59 years. Surviving are two sons, Michael of Atlanta, GA and Matthew of Advance; and a brother, Max Lowish of Summit, NJ. Mr. Lowish was a veteran of World War II. A member of the 82nd Airborne, he took part in the Normandy Invasion and went through the war to the end at the Battle of Bastonge and Ardennes Forest. He was the recipient of two Purple Hearts and the Bronze Star. Mr. Lowish graduated from Indiana University and later moved to Wilmington. There he began a long career with North Carolina Blue Cross and Blue Shield. His job took the family to several towns in the Piedmont region of North Carolina but for Dick and Kay, Winston-Salem was home. An avid golfer, Dick had many friends in the local golf community. It was his wish that no public services be held and that his ashes be scattered in the Blue Ridge Mountains near his wife. In lieu of flowers, it was Dick's wish that memorials be made to the Salvation Army. The family would like to thank the caregivers at Vienna Village for the loving kindness and gentle care they gave to Mr. Lowish. They are also grateful for the love, support and prayers from good friends.
