Mr. Richard Alan Latham, 81, of Winston-Salem, NC passed away Monday, March 14, 2011. He was born January 3, 1930 in Muscatine, Iowa to the late Samuel I. and Henrietta H. Latham. Mr. Latham was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Marilyn Hall, and son Alan Fuqua Latham. Mr. Latham was a retired representative of Phoenix Mutual Life Insurance and a benefits counselor of Western Electric for 20 years. He was a graduate of Iowa State University where he was a member of the Delta Sigma Phi fraternity. Mr. Latham served as a Second Lieutenant with the 82nd Airborne during the Korean War and made over 100 jumps as a parachutist. He was a member of the Auctioneer Chorus for over 20 years. Mr. Latham was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Epiphany and he enjoyed his mission trips with the Epiphany Builders. He was most proud of co-founding the Ronald McDonald House of Winston Salem with his wife Penny. He is survived by his wife Penelope Fuqua Latham; three daughters, Kathryn (Paul) Spanos of Winston-Salem, Kathleen (Val) Gimenez of Winston-Salem, and Victoria (Chris) Armone of Montpelier, France; four sons, James (Deborah) Latham of Raleigh, Derek (Donna) Latham of Taylorsville, Greg (Nina) Latham of Paris, France, and Rodney (Lori) Latham of Clemmons; nineteen grandchildren and several great grandchildren; and a sister Helen Kaufman of Las Vegas, Nevada. The family will receive friends and family on Wednesday, March 16 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at the Hayworth Miller Funeral Home on Silas Creek Parkway and at other times at the residence of Kathryn Spanos. The service to celebrate Mr. Latham's life will be held Thursday, March 17 at 11:00 am at the Lutheran Church of the Epiphany in Winston Salem.
