Richard Cain

Mr. Richard Floyd Cain, 86, of Winston-Salem, passed away on Wednesday, August 11, 2021, at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.  Richard was born on January 14, 1935, in Davidson County, NC to the late Floyd Richard Cain and Ethel Bowers Cain.   He is survived by his wife Karen Shumaker Cain; two sons, Mark Cain (Rene) of Clemmons, NC and Jonathan Cain (Susan) of Advance, NC; a daughter, Teresa Cain of Clover, SC; grandchildren, Benjamin Cain (Kayla), Hannah Cain, Grace Cain, Laura Cain, and Mary Cain; great-grandchild, Remi Rice.  Richard had two brothers, James Cain and Luther Cain; and four sisters, Elizabeth Hartman, Martha Mae Sells, Jeanette Sowers and Elaine Latham.  Richard grew up in Davidson County and spent his early years working in the family business, the Cain Candy Company.  He eloped with Karen, the love of his life, before serving in the United States Army Engineer Corps in Europe for two years.  Richard loved his family, making many fun and happy memories with Karen and the kids.  He worked as a machinist at Westinghouse for 27 years before his retirement.  A faithful Christian his entire life, Richard was a charter member of Faith Missionary Alliance Church where he served as a deacon.  Richard and Karen moved their membership to Ardmore Baptist Church in 2008 where he enjoyed many Senior events and Christian friendships.  Richard was an avid gardener who wasn’t happy unless he was “digging in the dirt”.   He loved his vegetable and flower gardens and sharing their produce.  He often surprised Karen with fresh flowers.  Richard was also a skilled woodworker who made special gifts for his family and made sure all the local birds had a home.  He loved playing with his children and grandchildren, making them toys and helping them with projects. Richard and Karen, his wife of 65 years, travelled extensively through the US, Europe, and Australia.   A service to celebrate Richard’s life will be held at 2:00pm on Saturday September 4th at Ardmore Baptist Church with Rev. Tyler Tankersley and Dr. Gina M. Brock officiating.  The family requests attendees wear masks and follow social distancing guidelines.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Ardmore Baptist Church, 501 Miller St., Winston-Salem, NC 27103.  Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel is serving the family of Mr. Cain.
