Reverend Robert “Bob” Benford Steagall, 88 of Kernersville, NC, entered heaven’s gates on Monday February 8, 2021 at 2:20 am.
He was born in Draper NC (now Eden) on April 29, 1932, to the late John Wade Steagall and Jennette Dunn Steagall. Bob was the fourth of eleven children (10 boys and 1 girl). Bob was a graduate of Piedmont Bible College in Winston Salem, NC with degrees in Religious Education and Theology. He also held a BA in Social Studies from Guilford College. He was also an ordained minister of the gospel.
While in college Bob met and fell in love with his beautiful bride Marianne Binkley Steagall. They were married for 68 years.
Bob was a member of Salem Baptist Church, but in recent years attended Gospel Light Baptist Church and Kerwin Baptist Church. He was a faithful Sunday school teacher of the Hughey Thomas Sunday School Men’s Class at Salem for many years. Bob had a love for learning and for books. He taught sixth-eleventh grade history and math. He served as the Vice Principal of Salem Baptist Day School, where he later retired after 23 years of teaching. He valued education and loved his students. His love for teaching made an impact on so many lives.
In addition to his parents, Bob is preceded in death by his brother James Steagall, Ted Steagall, Reverend Bobby Ray Steagall, Franklin Steagall, Johnny Steagall, Cody Steagall, Tommy Steagall, and Roger Steagall.
He is survived by his faithful wife of 68 years, Marianne Binkley Steagall of Kernersville, NC, a son Robert William (Bill) Steagall and wife Patricia (Pat) of Greensboro, NC (Pat’s family includes a son Dr. Jeffrey Hockett, a grandson Gavin, granddaughters Shelby, Peyton, and Aubree of Hampstead and Wilmington NC area), one granddaughter, Michelle Spivey and husband Pastor Heath Spivey, of Stuarts Draft, VA, two great granddaughters Kennedy and Kensley-the joys of his life of Virginia, a sister Ann Steagall Stophel of Eden, NC and one brother Attorney Barry Michael Steagall and wife Kathy of Redington Beach, FL, a number of nieces and nephews, and many wonderful friends.
Due to COVID restrictions, a private funeral service for the family will be held Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel Winston Salem, NC, officiated by a lifelong friend, Dr. Billy Martin. Burial will follow the service at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens in Winston Salem, NC. Contributions in Bob’s memory may be made to Grace Baptist Bible College: PO Box 30127 Winston Salem, NC 27130.
