Rev. Mervin James Garrison

Rev. Mervin James Garrison, 76, passed away Wednesday, May 27, 2015 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born in Forsyth County on December 22, 1938 to the late John Frank and Emma Matthews Garrison. Mr. Garrison graduated from Southwest High School in 1957 and then attended N.C. State University and graduated from Wake Forest College in 1962. He then received his Masters of Divinity from Southeastern Seminary in Wake Forest, NC in 1966. Mr. Garrison served churches in Virginia, Florida, and North Carolina and retired in 2004. He was a member of Clemmons First Baptist Church and remained active with the Pilot Mountain Baptist Association. He enjoyed working with the N.C. Baptist Men's Disaster Relief Teams and going on various mission trips. Mervin also enjoyed carpentry work, traveling to the mountains and beach and spending time with his grandchildren. Preceding him in death were two brothers, John Frank Garrison, Jr. and Glenn Weldon Garrison; sister, Peggy Garrison Kite. Surviving is his wife of nearly 54 years, Kay Spainhour Garrison; son, James Allen Garrison (Ruth) of Arden, NC; daughter, Dawn Garrison Atkinson (Robb) of Raleigh; four grandchildren, Sarah Atkinson of Nairobi, Kenya, Hannah Atkinson, Nicholas Atkinson, and Jacob Garrison; brother, Alvin Grady Garrison (Martha) of Lewisville; also surviving are several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, May 30, 2015 at Quaker Gap Baptist Church. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12-2 PM prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Baptist Children's Homes of NC, PO Box 338, Thomasville, NC 27361. The family would like to thank Dr. Paschold and his staff and to the staff on 9 West at Forsyth Medical Center for all the care they gave to Mr. Garrison.
