Rev. Dr. Oscar Leighton Culler (Leighton)
February 22, 1933- July 22, 2016
Leighton was born in Patrick County, Virginia and was the son of the late Rev. Herbert Hampton and Lena Victoria Smith Culler. He was preceded in death by his brothers Eric and Arthur and sisters Pauline Hannah, Iris Lail, Lorraine Lowrey and Violet Morrison. Survivors include his sisters Rachael Culler, Mickey Walters and Rosa Burwell. Also his wife of 63 years Gay Nell Simpson Culler and sons Mike (Lola), Mark (Lori) and Dave. Leighton was the proud grandfather of Laura Byrd, Jessica Butner, Coley, Walker and Stoney Culler.
Leighton served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. As an adept mathematician, he was recognized as ""too valuable to the unit"" to be deployed overseas and served with the Army Corps of Engineers. After finishing with the Army Leighton attended High Point University and graduated with a Bachelors of Science in Mathematics. He completed the requirements for graduation in 3 years. He attended The University of North Carolina and completed his Teaching Certificate and worked as a math teacher at RJ Reynolds High School in Winston Salem, NC.
While teaching Leighton felt his calling to become a Minister and attended Union Theological Seminary. He graduated with a Masters degree in Divinity in 1965. From here he served many churches from Richmond to New Orleans, Cincinnati and all points in between. In this time, he completed the requirements for a Doctorate in Ministry from Columbia Seminary.
Education and learning were very important to him and he stressed this importance to parishioners in every setting he was in. People were his passion and he touched the lives of thousands during his Ministry in the Presbyterian Church.
The family celebrates his life and unilaterally trusts that he is in the gracious hands of God. We, the family, are very grateful for the life of Leighton- his quirks, infectious laugh, positive attitude and more than anything his love for us and all others as well. He was a blessing.
