Ret. Msgt. Gordon D. Flanagan, Jr.

MSgt. Gordon Dayton Flanagan, Jr., USMC (Ret.), went home to be with his Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ on Saturday, May 28, 2011. He was born June 19, 1925 to the late Gordon Dayton Flanagan and Margie Cloe Bennett Flanagan in Red Creek, West Va. He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Alice Plemmons Flanagan; an infant son, George and brothers and a sister. Surviving are a daughter, Phyllis Dellinger (Gordon) of Winston-Salem; two sons, Robert Flanagan (Kathy) of California and Gordon Flanagan, III (Kim) of Goldsboro; eight grandchildren, Preston Stringer, Jr. of Jonesville, Paul and Michelle Stringer of Winston-Salem, Chrissy, Bobby and Patrick Flanagan of California and Sean and Katie Flanagan of Goldsboro; two great granddaughters, Lela and Shea of Winston-Salem. Also surviving are Bill and Jewell Walker , very close friends more like a brother and sister. Msgt. Flanagan was a member of Grace Baptist Temple being very active while health permitted, becoming a member in 1973. He served in the U.S. Marine Corp during World War II, Korea and Vietnam, retiring as a Master Sergeant. Upon retirement from the Marines, he worked at several places including the U.S. Post Office, various Security Guard Units, short order cook and finally with the Davidson County Sanitation Department as a Boy Site Attendant, retiring at the age of 80. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 31, 2011 at Grace Baptist Temple with Pastor Ed Sears officiating. Interment will follow in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens with Military Honors. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Monday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Grace Baptist Temple Youth Ministries or to The North Carolina Lions Foundation, Box 39, Sherrills Ford, NC 28673(an organization providing help to the blind and visually impaired of the world) Online condolences may be made to www.hayworth-miller.com.
