Reid Hushel Burgess, 91, of Winston-Salem, husband of the late Louise Kimel Burgess, went to be with the Lord on August 4, 2014. He was born on March 19, 1923 in Greene County, Georgia, to Will Henry and Ruby Burgess. He is survived by two sons, Larry (Robin) Burgess of Lewisville, and Brad (Pam) Burgess of Winston-Salem, four grandchildren, Jennifer (Richard) Snipes of Elon, Josh (Renea) of Lewisville, Hayley and Krista Burgess, both of Winston-Salem, one great-grandchild, Carly Kate Burgess of Lewisville, and two sisters, Melba Sidden and Jackie Clinard, both of Winston-Salem.
In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Burgess was preceded in death by two brothers, Horace Burgess and Walter Burgess, and three sisters, Jewell Dodd, Hazel Ireland, and Reba Livengood. He grew up in Forsyth County, NC and graduated from Rural Hall High School. Reid was a skilled brick and stone mason, a trade he learned from his brother, Walter, for whom he worked at W.C. Burgess Construction Company for many years. He retired as a mason from the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools in 1988. Reid never met a stranger and enjoyed talking with everyone he met. He was an active member of Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church from the time he married Louise in 1944. Reid loved the Lord and his church and was a Sunday School teacher for many years as long as his health permitted. Reid and Louise loved each other dearly and enjoyed 66 years of marriage until her death in 2010. He and Louise enjoyed entertaining family and friends at their mountain house in Dugspur, VA. They had many good times with his brother-in-law, John Kimel, and wife, Violet, at their mountain houses and ten straight Octobers together at the beach at Pine Knoll Shores. Affectionately known as Poppy by his grandchildren, he had many wonderful times with them at the mountain house and in recent years, attending Hayley and Krista's softball games.
A celebration of Reid's life will be held Thursday, August 7, 2014 at 11 am at Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church with Reverend Charles Halipilias officiating. Interment will follow the service in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday, August 6, 2014 from 6 -8 pm at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.
Brad and Larry would like to thank Robin Owens, Dad's niece, for the love and care she gave him. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Mt.
