Raymond Vernon Pop" Shumate

Mr. Raymond Vernon ""Pop"" Shumate, 78, passed away Wednesday, October 6, 2010 at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. He was born in Wilkes Co. to the late Lenard and Lollie Byrd Shumate. Mr. Shumate was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend who will be missed by all who knew him. He served his country proudly in the United States Navy during the Korean War and retired from Piedmont Concrete as a mechanic. He loved to ride his motorcycle. He and his wife rode to the beach and to the mountains and most everywhere in between. Mr. Shumate is survived by his wife of 55 years, Nancy Pike Shumate of the home, two daughters, Cathy Burroughs and husband Mike of Rural Hall and Pam Beckerman and husband David of Mocksville, two grandsons, Jamie Collins and wife Lesia of Tobaccoville and Chris Collins of Rural Hall, five great-grandchildren, Madisen, Zakerie, Allissa, Trey and Olivia, one brother, Clyde Shumate of Supply and a very special cousin, Margaret Epperson of Rural Hall. A graveside service will be conducted 12:00 noon Saturday, October 9, 2010 at Crestview Memorial Park in Rural Hall with Rev. Harold Bassett officiating. Military rites will be provided by American Legion Post #55 in Winston-Salem. The family will receive friends from 7-9 this evening October 8, 2010 at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home in Rural Hall.
