Mr. Raymond Martin (Marty), 91 of Winston-Salem, died Saturday, March 7, 2009 at Autumn Leaves Living of Carrollton, Texas. Mr. Martin was born November 27, 1917 in L'Aquila, Italy, a son of the late Paul Martin and Adele Mangano Martin. He grew up in New Kensington, Pennsylvania before enlisting in the US Marine Corp. in 1938. He was a sergeant in the 3rd Marine Division and served his country with pride and honor for seven years including a tour of duty in the South Pacific during WWII. Mr. Martin was awarded the Purple Heart after being wounded in action on Bougainville Island, Papua New Guinea, in the Solomon Islands in the South Pacific. After his honorable discharge from the US Marine Corp. and marriage to Polly Arlene Dwiggins, they moved to Winston-Salem, North Carolina where Raymond worked for Western Electric on Lexington Road until he retired. He was preceded in death by his wife Polly, his brother Patsy Martin and his sister Anna-Marie Martin, both of Pennsylvania. Raymond was an artist and enjoyed distance running, winning numerous marathon medals for his age groups well into his seventies. He is survived by his son, Ray Martin, Lewisville, Texas, daughter, Barbara Billings, Lafayette, Indiana, brother, Louie Martin, Lower Burrell, Pennsylvania, brother, Oscar Martin, Lower Burrell, Pennsylvania, brother, Frank Martin, Arnold, Pennsylvania, grandchildren, Melissa Barlow of Winston-Salem, Nicholas Martin and Brandon Martin of Lewisville, Texas, and Brian Billings of Lafayette, Indiana, great-grandchildren, Carrie Barlow and Olivia Barlow, both of Winston-Salem. A graveside service will be conducted 11:00 AM Wednesday, March 11, 2009 at Rose Cemetery in Mocksville, North Carolina with military honors. The family will receive friends 6:30 - 8:30 PM Tuesday, March 10, 2009 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.
