Raymond Dowd went home to live forever in God's presence on Saturday, May 23, 2009 at the age of 85. Raymond (Ray), a native of Atlanta, Georgia, resided in Winston-Salem and Lewisville, since November 1979. Ray was born to the late Joseph James and Adele Hooks Dowd on Friday, December 28, 1923 in Atlanta Georgia. After school he entered the armed forces serving in the Navy as a corpsman in WWII as well as the Korean conflict. He married the late Elizabeth Esther Gray on September 5, 1953. He is survived by two children: Steven Allen Dowd who resides in King, NC with his wife Susie Grace; and Kathy Caroline Hopkins, who resides in Lewisville, NC with her husband Ronald Dewey Hopkins. There are six grandchildren: Stuart Michael Dowd, Scott Russel Dowd, Spencer Caleb Dowd, Joseph Samuel Hopkins, Stephanie Grace Dowd, and Sara Elizabeth Hopkins. Raymond retired from Piedmont Baptist College in 1991 where he managed the maintenance and grounds. He has been a member of Salem Baptist Church in Winston-Salem since 1979. On May 26th, the family will be receiving friends at Salem Baptist Church from 4:00pm until 6:30pm with the memorial service to follow at 7:00pm. Pastor Howard Wilburn will be presiding.
