Ray Vernon Smith, Sr.

Mr. Ray Vernon Smith, Sr. 78 of Winston-Salem died Monday, June 21, 2010 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Mr. Smith was born July 23, 1931 in Wise County, Virginia a son of the late Lewis Smith and the late Sarah McCardy Smith. He was a US Army Sergeant serving in Korea where he was wounded, and he received the Bronze Star. During his recovery, he wrote letters and communicated with family members of fallen US troops. He could speak and write Japanese and studied the Japanese culture. He was an avid reader and loved to hunt and fish. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Bobbie Taulbee Smith. He is survived by his daughters, Patricia Ritchie and husband Clyde, Annette Huddleston and husband Michael; son, Ray Smith, Jr. and his late wife Kandy; grandchildren, Christopher Wolff, Chris Smith, Michelle Sawyer, and Ashley Huddleston, and 6 great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends at 6:00 PM Friday, June 26, 2010 at the home of Annette and Michael Huddleston 694 Jes Wes Ln. Lexington, NC 27295. The family would like to thank Dr. Edward Hill, Dr. Atkinsen, the second floor nurses at Forsyth Medical Center, and the staff at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home for their kind care and support.
