Ray Franklin Hine

On Friday, June 29, Ray Hine joined the love of his life, Mickey, in their heavenly home, where they are fishing with their son, Steve, and collecting seashells with their granddaughter, Allison. The most important things in Ray's life were his church, family, and fishing with his buddies off the North Carolina coast at Davis Island. From his early childhood, Ray attended Friedland Moravian Church with his parents, Walter Ray Hine and Sarah Gertrude Sides. His Christian beliefs formed a strong foundation for each aspect of his life as husband, father, grandfather, homebuilder, mentor and friend. An active church member, Ray faithfully served his church in numerous capacities including Trustee, Elder, Sacristan, Usher, Youth Leader and others. Ray attended Union Cross Elementary, Sedge Garden, and graduated from Griffith High School. While attending Griffith, Ray met Mickey Lavada McCuiston and told his friends that he was going to marry her. Staying true to his word, on December 14, 1946, Ray and Mickey were married and shared close to sixty wonderful years. Together they had three sons and three daughters. Annual camping trips were a family tradition, from the Great Smoky Mountains to the shores of the Atlantic. In the summer of 1970, with the help of their children, they built a cabin on Davis Island that would become host to many fishing trips and family adventures in the decades to come. Ray and Mickey fostered a strong Christian faith for their children by attending church every Sunday and establishing a family bedtime ritual of reading the Bible and praying together. Ray founded Hine Home Builders and, with his brother, Sam, built more than 150 homes in the Winston-Salem area. For more than 45 years, Ray was a member of the Winston-Salem Home Builders Association, where he made friends and won awards for his service and leadership. He served as President in 1986, was a member of the Board of Directors, Ethics Committee, and Remodeler's Council, and was voted Builder of the Year in 1987. He earned a Distinguished Service Award in 1994 and recruited over 300 members to the Home Builder's Association. In April of 2000, Ray was named an Honorary Lifetime Member. Born on March 26, 1928 in Winston-Salem, NC., Ray was preceded in death by his wife, Mickey, his son, Steven Franklin, and his granddaughter, Allison Hine. He is survived by two sons, Alan Ray (Sharon) Hine, Kenneth (Terri) Hine, three daughters, Vena Devi ""Janie"" Lefferts of Sedona, AZ, Kathryn (Jonathan) Barnes, and Angela (Erik) Salzwedel, daughter-in-law, Sharon Leonard, grandchildren Duane (Sheri) Hine, Stacy (Hill) Scott, Sarah (Josh) Tucker, Jonathan Barnes, Kasey Hine, Kelly Hine, Hannah Salzwedel, Eve Salzwedel, 6 great-grandsons, and one brother, Sam Hine. The funeral service will be held on Thursday, July 5, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at Friedland Moravian Church, 2750 Friedland Church Rd., Winston-Salem. Burial will follow in God's Acre. The family will greet friends in the church fellowship hall immediately following the burial service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Friedland Moravian Church. Special thanks to Teresa Young, Dr. Applegate, and the nurses and doctors at the WFUBMC 7th floor CCU for their special care given to our father during the last 6 weeks of his life.
