Ralph Johnson, 69, (Sweetheart, Dad, PawPaw, Poppy), became ""absent from the body and present with the Lord"" on Tuesday, March 19, 2013, at 3:32pm. Ralph was born in Clemmons on April 2, 1943 to the late Andrew and Alene Johnson. He was a life-long resident of Clemmons. He graduated from Southwest High School in 1963 where he met his high school sweetheart and the love of his life, Carol Call. They married in 1964 and would have celebrated their 49th wedding anniversary this year. Ralph joined the Winston-Salem Police Department in 1966 and retired with 30 years of service with a rank of Lieutenant. Ralph left a lasting legacy there, not only as a leader, but as a friend. Many a police officer has said ""there has never been anyone before or since that has brought as much laughter as Ralph Johnson."" Ralph was a member of Yadkin Valley Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon, Sunday School Superintendent, Sunday School Teacher, Usher, Choir Member, and in any other capacity ever called upon for. After retirement, Ralph and Carol spent many great days reliving their youth in their '49 Chevy, of which he was a member of several car clubs. They had many laughs attending numerous ""Cruise-Ins"". They were also fortunate enough to travel to many places they had always dreamed of going during their retirement years. Ralph is survived by his loving wife, Carol; his daughter, Stephanie Johnson Mitchell and husband Steve, both of Lexington, SC; his son, Ralph Allen Johnson Jr. and wife Donna, of East Bend, NC; four amazing grandchildren, Connor, Wesley and Trey Mitchell of Lexington, SC, and Porter Johnson of East Bend, NC; and his sister, Juanita Shermer of Clemmons, NC. A funeral service will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, March 23, 2013, at Yadkin Valley Baptist Church with Rev. Ronnie Craddock officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00-9:00 PM Friday at Hayworth-Miller Lewisville Chapel. Flowers will be accepted. Donations may be made in memory of Ralph to: Yadkin Valley Baptist Church, 1324 Yadkin Valley Road, Advance, NC 27006. The family would like to thank the staff in ICU Neurology, the Palliative Care Staff at Forsyth Medical Center, and a special thanks to Dr. Donald Heck.
