Phyllis Jean Bates Hamby

            Mrs. Phyllis Jean Bates Hamby, 87, passed away January 20, 2024.  She was born August 9, 1936, in Forsyth County to the late James Sanford Bates, Sr. and Cassie Goodman Bates.  Phyllis worked and retired from RJ Reynolds with 36 years’ service.  She was a member of Woodland Baptist Church for many years then later went to First Baptist Church of Stanleyville.  In her spare time, she loved to go bowling in the women’s league at Northside Lane, and she loves sewing.  In addition, she loved the beach.  Phyllis enjoyed jumping on a golf cart in Ocean Lakes and riding for hours.  Most importantly, she loved being with family.   In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Walter G Hamby; one son, Ronald Lee Enscore; two brothers, Charles Bates and Alden Bates, and one sister, Peggy Bates Keaton; a special friend, Voit Tuttle.  She is survived by three daughters, Deborah Enscore Ball (Donald), Teresa Hamby McGrath (Bobby), and Pamela Hamby Tang (Stanley); 6 grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren; one brother, James Sanford Bates, Jr.  A funeral service will be conducted 11:00 AM Wednesday, January 24, 2024, at First Baptist Church of Stanleyville with Rev. Dr. Virgil Dwyer and Pastor Eddie Honeycutt officiating.  Interment will follow the service at Gardens of Memory in Walkertown.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service beginning at 10:00 AM.
