Phillip Landrus Stanley

Phillip L. Stanley, 72, of Winston-Salem died Friday, May 29, 2009 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home after a short illness of leukemia. He was born July 10, 1936 in Carroll County, VA, the son of the late Landrus W. and Josephine Stanley. After college and serving two years in the military, he retired from the Winston-Salem Fire Dept as a Captain, having served 30 years where he was awarded an accommodation from the Mayor and Alderman for his bravery during a major warehouse fire. He also played a large part in training new recruits. He enjoyed spending time with his family at their beach house. A very avid golfer having 5 holes in one under his belt was a big accomplishment for him. Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Jo Ann P. Stanley of the home; his son, Scott (Suzanne) Stanley of Greensboro; his daughter, Suzanne (Dr. Andrew) Alexander of Tampa, FL; his granddaughters, Amelia, Lana and Ava Alexander; his grandsons, McCauley Stanley and Colin Beairsto; two devoted sisters, Lenora Henley and Victoria (Jerry) Hall; three nephews, Clay Shields, Michael Hall and Chad Hall; and one niece, Jody Shields Young. A memorial service will be conducted Thursday at 2:00 PM at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Rev. Norwood Green and Rev. David Childers officiating. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care Center, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103 in his name.
