HIGH POINT – Philip Wade Shields, 91, passed away Monday, January 14, 2019 at his home. Wade was born on November 28, 1927 in Guilford County to Wesley Virgil and Florence Meris Shields. Wade was a veteran of the US Army during the Korean Conflict. After retiring from Sears Roebuck, he enjoyed gardening, especially growing watermelons. Wade was a member of Smith Grove Baptist Church, serving as a deacon for over 60 years. In addition to his parents, Wade was preceded in death by five brothers and sisters. Surviving are his wife of 67 years, Irene Pruitt Shields; three children, Donna Shields, Phillip Shields (Gwyn), and Doug Shields (Carol); five grandchildren, Matthew, Nicholas, Dustin, Kristin and Hannah; five great grandchildren, Emily, Macie, Grayson, Summer, and Carter; and one sister, Verelee Underwood. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 16, 2019, at Smith Grove Baptist Church with Pastor Bruce Freeman officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 – 1:45 p.m. prior to the service at the church. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Greensboro, 2500 Summit Ave, Greensboro, NC 27405, or Smith Grove Baptist Church, 2707 Sandy Ridge Rd, Colfax, NC 27235.
