Philip Edward Lucas, a local attorney for over 50 years, passed away peacefully on September 4, 2008. He was born September 9, 1918 in Burgaw, NC, the son of Dr. P. E. Lucas and Elizabeth Whitehead Bradford Lucas. He received his AB degree in 1938 and JD Degree in 1941 from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1942, and completed Officer Training School at Columbia University, New York, NY in 1943. He served in the Pacific as Executive Officer on destroyer escort ships through the end of World War II, achieving the rank of Lieutenant, and was honorably discharged in 1946. Early in his professional career he served as law clerk for North Carolina Supreme Court, the North Carolina Attorney General's Office and the Institute of Government in Chapel Hill. He moved to Winston-Salem in 1947 to enter private practice with Bryce Parker. Parker and Lucas merged with Craig and Craig in 1959. In 1966 Mr. Lucas and Gaither Jenkins formed the firm of Jenkins and Lucas, now Wells Jenkins Lucas & Jenkins PLLC. Mr. Lucas specialized in estate administration and estate planning and served for many years as Public Administrator for Forsyth County. He retired from active practice in 1998 and remained Of Counsel with the firm until 2002. He was a past President of the Forsyth County Bar Association, and also chaired the Forsyth County Democratic Party, the Forsyth County Democratic Executive Committee, and the Forsyth County Board of Elections. He served on the Boards of the Winston-Salem Chapter of the American Red Cross, the Winston-Salem ABC Board, and the Forsyth County Department of Social Services. Mr. Lucas was a member of Highland Presbyterian Church, serving on the Board of Deacons, which he chaired, the Bench of Elders, and was a Sunday School teacher. A long time resident of Salemtowne, Mr. Lucas was preceded in death by his wife Marie Beaudry Lucas in 1992, daughter Catherine Lucas Daye, 2005, and sister Luna Daile Bradford Parker, 1992. He is survived by nephew A. Scott Parker, III of St. Petersburg Fl, niece Elizabeth Parker Dickey of Charlotte, and son-in-law Gary W. Daye of Charlotte. Services will be held on Monday September 8 at 2:00 p.m. at Highland Presbyterian Church, followed by committal service at Forsyth Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Salemtowne, Highland Presbyterian Church or the Forsyth County Humane Society.
