Mr. Permanius Monroe (Pete) Nifong, Jr. died on March 11, 2010 at Hospice at the VA Medical Center in Salisbury, NC. He was born on January 11, 1923 to Permanius and Lessie Miller Nifong. He was of the Methodist faith. Mr. Nifong was a veteran of World War II serving in the Army as a machine gunner in a tank destroyer. He was wounded in combat in North Africa and spent 13 months in first Valley Forge Hospital and later at Walter Reed Army Hospital. He received the Order of the Purple Heart for meritorious military service during combat and wounds received in action. He also was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, the American Campaign Bar, and the North African Campaign Bar with two silver stars for participation in two major battles. Mr. Nifong served his country with pride and considered it a privilege to do so. He worked for Bassick-Sack Co. in his earlier years, then retiring from Stratford Metal Finishing. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Marie in 2001; two brothers and two sisters. He is survived by two daughters, Teresa Baldwin and husband Steve and Cheryl Miller and husband Rob; two granddaughters, April Baldwin and Heather Miller; a sister, Earsley Fulton and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members and his special canine friend ""Punkin"". According to his wishes, he will have a graveside service with military rites 11:00 a.m. Monday, March 15, 2010 at Westlawn Gardens of Memory. The family will greet friends following the service. The family wished to express their appreciating to all the personnel at both Forsyth Medical Center and the VA Medical center in Salisbury for their kind and compassionate care these last few weeks.
