Percy (Pete) Jones Long passed away on Friday, November 14, 2008. He was born September 14, 1924 in Winston-Salem, the son of John W. Long and Swanna Jones Long. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, John W. Long, Jr. and James Long; a sister, Margaret Potter; and a daughter-in-law, Kathy Long. Surviving him is his loving wife, Vickie Lingle Long. Also surviving are two sons, Dr. D. Michael Long of Signal Mtn., TN, and Larry D. Long of Cary, NC; one daughter, Lori L. Thompson (Todd) of Kernersville; two grandchildren, Ryan and Megan Long of Signal Mtn., TN; a niece, La'Vena J. Hiatt of Winston-Salem; four sisters, Elfreda Marrows of Denver, CO, Virginia Finney of Yadkinville, Tempie Peer of Fort White, FL and Kathern Christler and Joyce Christler of Casper, WY. Mr. Long was a graduate of Gray High School (Class of 1943). He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and the Korean War. He was employed at Hennis Freight Lines for twenty years as the Director of Driver Personnel and Director of Labor Relations; and at Pilot Freight Carriers for twelve years as Vice-President of Labor Relations. During his career in the trucking industry, he was Regional Vice-President of the American Trucking Association's Industrial Relations Committee. Mr. Long also served as a member of the National Grievance Committee; and was chairman of the Carolinas and Virginia negotiations and grievance committees. In addition, he was owner and operator of VIP Catering Service for over 20 years. Mr. Long was a member of the Masonic Piedmont Pioneer Lodge 685, and Moose Lodge No. 466; also a member of the National and Carolinas chapter of DESA (Destroyer Escort Sailors Association). Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, November 16th at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Chaplain Bill Teague officiating. Burial will follow in Waughtown Cemetery.
