Peggy Elmira Hatley Mourino was born February 5, 1934 in a Stanly County, NC farmhouse to Ruby Kelley Hatley and Ira Vanburen Hatley. She grew up there and graduated from Millingport High School in Albemarle, NC. After a taste of hosiery mill work, she enrolled in nursing school at Cabarrus County Hospital in 1952. Peggy earned her R.N. in 1955. She married Alfonso Javier Mourino on September 10, 1955. Briefly the couple lived in Queens, NY where Al had a mechanical engineering position. Freezing temperatures and accompanying winter blusteriness spurred them back to the South and they settled in Winston-Salem, NC. Peggy worked at City Hospital there. In the early 70’she did third shift for a while at a hospital in Burlington, NC when Al worked for Western Electric and was transferred to a plant closer to that location. In 1974, Al went back to the Western Electric plant there and Peggy got a position with Dr. William Elesha’s office of minor surgery. She stayed there until Dr. Elesha retired and she retired as well in 1991. Peggy continued to be a very industrious homemaker with gardening, cooking, food preserving and sewing talents. Her husband of 56 and a half years predeceased her on March 9, 2012. Peggy was also predeceased by a half brother, Henry Gardner and cousins, Linda Smetzer and John Williams. Her surviving loved ones include daughter Kelley Basham, son-in-law, Richard and grandchildren, Kayla and Erik. Also surviving are two half siblings, Steve Hatley and Libby Miller; and the following cousins: Reggie Hatley, Jan Fesperman, Larry Shoe, Rick Gordon and Joyce Jensen. Also, Peggy is survived by her best friend and fellow retired nurse, Wanda Foster, known since 1956. Many have grown to love her as they experienced her spontaneous hospitality and generous heartedness. She enriched those who knew her in many ways. Peggy went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus, on March 8, 2023.
