Peggy Hartley Holloway

Peggy Hartley Holloway, a resident of Salemtowne Retirement Community, died peacefully on Sunday, July 6 after a period of declining health. She was born on March 10, 1928, the daughter of Stephen and Clyde Hartley. Peggy grew up in Georgiana, AL before attending Auburn University at the age of 17 in 1945 to become a lab technician. There she met Clarke Lee Holloway, after an alphabetical lab pairing of Hartley and Holloway in microbiology class. They were married on September 19, 1948, at the Boone family home in Georgiana, and celebrated 59 years of a devoted and loving marriage. Peggy returned to Auburn University to receive her Master's Degree in Counseling and served as a mentor and friend to many students. She worked in the Career Development Office where her skills and caring nature helped many students to make decisions about their life's work. Clarke and Peggy were active members of Auburn First Baptist Church and the Seekers Sunday school class. Peggy enjoyed playing bridge, reading and making homemade bread to share with friends and family. She was also a volunteer for many years at the East Alabama Medical Center and was an active member of the local PEO chapter. After retirement, Peggy and Clarke travelled the world, including Europe, Russia, Asia and Africa. They particularly enjoyed their time in Africa where they enjoyed safaris as well as helping with a mission project in Kenya. They also enjoyed the time they spent in Grenada, where Clarke taught anatomy at the College of Medicine and Peggy enjoyed getting to know the local culture and meet new friends.
Near and dear to Peggy's heart was the Auburn community and the countless lifelong friends she made. She enjoyed entertaining friends at her home of more than 40 years on Blake Street. She loved watching the birds every morning from the kitchen table, cutting up watermelon on the porch during the hot summers, and attending Auburn football and basketball games. She and Clarke had season tickets until health problems intervened. Peggy loved to cheer on the Auburn Tigers and was especially happy when they won the National Championship in 2012. For the past five years, Peggy has been a resident at Salemtowne Retirement Community in Winston-Salem, NC. There she made many friends, enjoyed ""talking sports"" and was loved by all of the Salemtowne family. It was touching to see the many team members and friends who called or came by to visit in the hospital. Peggy will be remembered by all for her gentle spirit, strong faith and compassionate nature.
She is survived by daughter Laura Holloway Kelley and husband Steve of Winston-Salem, NC, son, Keith Andrew Holloway of CA, daughter-in-law Sherri Holloway of Monroe County, AL, sister, Joanne Williams and brother-in-law, Rob Williams, and nephew, Steve Williams, of Georgiana, AL, niece Joy Hartley McGowen and family and nephew Richard Hartley and family. Also, grandchildren, Erin and Ryan Kelley, Joseph and Keith Holloway, Jacob Holloway, and Karoline, Hartley and Clarke Holloway.
She is predeceased by her husband, Clarke Lee Holloway, and son, Richard Lee Holloway.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Auburn First Baptist Church (128 East Glenn Avenue, Auburn, AL 36830) or Salemtowne Retirement Community (Pastoral Care or Residence Assistance Funds, 1000 Salemtowne Dr., Winston-Salem, NC 27106).
The family would like to send a special thank you to all of the team at Salemtowne, where she was loved and cared for like a family member.
