Peggy Allen Hairrell Boyer, 76, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Wednesday, December 08, 2010 at Forsyth Medical Center. She has joined her beloved son Ken in heaven where she is hugging him dearly. Peggy was born in Etowah, TN on December 27, 1933 to the late Sammie Edd Shinliever Hairrell and Herbert Marshall Hairrell. A devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend, Peggy grew up in Athens, TN where she graduated from McMinn County High School. She played on the girls tennis team and was Miss Athens in 1951. Having known since high school that she wanted to be a nurse, Peggy first attended the University of Tennessee and then went on to graduate from East Tennessee Baptist Hospital School of Nursing in Knoxville, TN Peggy met her husband Swann when she was 15 years old. They were married on December 20, 1955 at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Athens, TN. Peggy and Swann relocated to Winston-Salem, NC in 1958. She worked at Baptist Hospital for several years before deciding to stay home and raise her two sons. She went back to work at Medical Park Hospital, a place she truly loved. After retiring in 1989, Peggy enjoyed spending time with her family, golfing, fishing, basket-making and had a great appreciation for colonial crafts. She had a wonderful group of friends she so enjoyed being with, especially all the dear ladies in bridge club. Peggy was preceded in death by her son Ken Bayless Boyer and her parents. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Swann Burnett Boyer; son, Dan A. Boyer and wife, Dawn of Winston-Salem; also surviving are her three grandchildren whom she loved and cared for so dearly, Katie, Bailey and Charlie Boyer; a sister, Patty Derrick of Niota, TN, her sister-in-law Anne B. Wilkerson and husband, James A. Wilkerson of Rock Hill, SC, her God-daughter, Francie Bush Parro of Winston-Salem, a dear and special friend Angie Wilson of Lexington and truly exceptional neighbors and friends Reg and Rhonda Fowler. The family would like to express sincere thanks to all the kind and special nurses on the sixth and ninth floors of Forsyth Medical Center. In the brief time she was there, Peggy came to adore all of you. We would also like to thank her wonderful team of Doctors: Dr. Reg Fowler, Dr. Eugene Paschold, Dr. Tony Kummer and Dr. David Kunkle. The Funeral Service will be Tuesday, December 14 at 11 a.m. at Hayworth Miller Funeral Home with the Reverend Bob Matthews officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:30- 8:30 p.m. Monday, December 13 at Hayworth Miller Funeral home on Silas Creek Parkway.
