Peggy Andrews

Mrs. Peggy Reavis Andrews, 87, of Winston-Salem, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 7, 2022, at Arbor Acres Retirement Community, where she was a resident for 15 years.  Peggy and her identical twin sister, Shirley, were born in Forsyth County on July 10, 1934, to the late Francis Delma Reavis and Elda Brandon Reavis.  In her earlier years, Peggy spent time in Yadkin County where most of her extended family lived.  Peggy graduated from Hanes High School, where she played the flute and was involved in many sports, including tennis, basketball, soccer, softball, and cheerleading.  Peggy attended Gardner-Web College.  She and her husband, John Andrews, were high school sweethearts at Hanes and they married in 1954.  They lived in Chapel Hill until his graduation from Pharmacy School in 1956 when they moved back to Winston-Salem for John to work with his father at Andrews Pharmacy.  They were married for 54 years until John’s death in 2008.  She worked at the family pharmacies - Andrews Pharmacy and Andrews-Summit Pharmacy - in various roles: clerk, bookkeeper, delivery person and on the annual inventory audit. Working at the stores was a complete family affair.  Throughout her life, Peggy loved playing tennis.  She was the Winston-Salem city singles and doubles champion several times and later played tennis at the state level.  She played until an injury in 2008 forced her to discontinue participation in the sport she loved.  Peggy was a longtime member and active in her church, Ardmore United Methodist Church.  She and John served at many Lovefeast services, played the piano for her Sunday school class and was a member of the bell choir. Peggy’s love for tennis was equaled only by her love for cats and dogs.  At one point, she had two dogs and three cats.  She was a longtime supporter of the Forsyth Humane Society and a volunteer at the Riverwood Therapeutic Riding Center.  She was active in her children’s and grandchildren’s lives.  She was a Brownie leader, took her girls to choir practice, horseback riding lessons and dance classes.  Later, she spent time with her grandchildren and delighted in their accomplishments.  In addition to her parents, Peggy was preceded in death by her husband, John Warren Andrews.  She is survived by her daughters, Alyce Gilbert (Gary) of Winston-Salem and Ellen Redmon of Mooresville, NC; grandchildren, Maryclaire Gilbert, Brandon Gilbert, Patrick Redmon, Ian Redmon; one niece and several nephews.  A graveside service will be held at 10:00 am on Monday, July 18, 2022, at Ardmore United Methodist Church with Rev. S. Neill Shaw officiating.  The family will receive friends from 9:30 until 10:00 am prior to the service at the church columbarium.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Forsyth Humane Society, 4881 Country Club Rd., Winston-Salem, NC 27104.  Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel is serving the family of Mrs. Andrews.
