Paul Julian Harrell, 96, of Winston Salem, NC, died surrounded by his children, Dec. 28, 2015. Paul grew up on a farm in Edenton, NC. After graduating from University of Richmond, he married Betty Smith. He was a lieutenant in the Navy during World War II and was a deep sea diver in the Mediterranean. After returning home, he attended Crozier Theological Seminary and served at Memorial Baptist Church in Arlington, VA from 1950 to 1965, and then at First Baptist Church of Haddonfield, NJ from 1965 to 1983. He was also an assistant chaplain for The United States House of Representatives for a time. He and Betty retired to Edenton, NC and in 2009 moved to Brookridge Retirement Home in Winston Salem. Betty and Paul traveled the world, including Central and South America, Europe, China, Russia, and Borneo. Paul was a golfer and an avid gardener. He was known for his engaging stories about World War II and growing up on a farm, his enjoyment of life, and his devotion to his wife and children. Paul is survived by son, Paul Harrell, Jr. and his wife, Rebecca Peer; daughter, Sally Harrell and her husband, Richard Bennett; daughter, Anne Mercado; grandchildren Nora Kindley, Alexander Mercado, and Sarah and Kathryn Harrell; great grandson, Julian DeGennaro; and sister, Nita Whitehurst. He was predeceased by his wife, Betty Harrell; parents Olia and Oscar Harrell, and 8 brothers and sisters. Memorial Service: First Baptist Church of Winston Salem chapel, Tuesday, Jan. 5 at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Baptist Church of Winston Salem or Edenton Baptist Church.
