Mrs. Pattie Chisman Hanes Ammons, 88, of Winston-Salem went to rest with the Lord, peacefully, with her children by her side on Wednesday, July 11, 2012 at The Oaks at Forsyth. She was born February 20, 1924 in Pine Hall, the daughter of the late, George Alexander and Martha (Pattie) Chisman Hanes. Mrs. Ammons attended Pine Hall School and graduated from Louisburg College in 1944. In earlier years she was an active member of Pine Hall (Bethesda) United Methodist Church, where she served many years as Church Treasurer. She was also active in Pine Hall Community Club, serving as Secretary. She was a retired Teacher's Aide from Pine Hall Elementary School. After retirement, she worked for over ten years as a Nanny for two families to help raise five more children in Walnut Cove and Winston-Salem. She then moved to Florida to help care for two grandsons. She was always at her happiest when surrounded by her loving children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In her later years, as she became less mobile, she kept up with everything going on in the world by staying tuned to Fox News. She had an excellent memory and kept her mind sharp watching Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy. She was an avid sports fan. She loved watching Tarheel basketball, Braves baseball and NASCAR. She was a fierce competitor at Canasta and Hand & Foot card games with family and friends, playing many games for hours on end. She was a treasure who positively impacted many lives and who will be dearly missed. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death be a son, Lewis Ammons; a sister, Margaret Hanes and five brothers, George Hanes, Lewis Hanes, John Hanes, William Hanes and Wade Hanes. Survivors include two daughters, Martha Sapp and husband, David of Lake Hartwell, GA and Margaret Ammons and Buck Butler of Winston-Salem; two sons, George Ammons and Judy Thomas of Fernandina Beach, FL and William Ammons and wife, Rebekah Ellerbe of Pfafftown; seven grandchildren, Pattie (Ed) McCrady, David Sapp III, Nicole Ammons, Brook Ammons, Whitney Ammons, Charlie (Rose) Dillon and Dermont Dillon; six great grandchildren, Eddie McCrady, Max McCrady, Evelyn McCrady, Ruth McCrady, Eliza-Jane Ammons-Leitch and Caralena Sapp; two dear friends, Gail Duncan and Brittany Thomas and her Collie, Abby ""Showdawg"". A graveside service will be conducted Saturday at 11:00 AM at Hanes Family Cemetery in Pine Hall with Rev. Mark Blair and Dr. William Campbell officiating. The family will receive friends Friday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Hayworth-Miller on Silas Creek Parkway.
