Oscar S. Shields was born January 31, 1926, the youngest son of Arthur Lee and Gelia Hudson Shields. Both parents died in the â70s. Both brothers, Clarence and Arthur Gray also preceded him in death. Oscar was a member of Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church for most of his life. He was first married to Betty Jane Sparks of Ronda, NC. They had no children. He was next married to Bernita C. Couch of Winston-Salem. From that marriage there was a step-son, K.G. Hester. There were also three children born of the marriage, Oscar, Jr., Sheila, and Kory. He and Bernita were divorced in 1996. After that, he and Susan Gibson had a son, Joshua Franklin Shields. Survivors include his children, Oscar, Jr., Sheila, Kory, and Joshua Shields; grandchildren, Lucas and Cecilia Shields; as well as two special friends, Dr. Richard Nash and wife, Mel, and Dr. Rick Edwards. For many years Oscar owned and operated Shields Realty Company along with Shields Income Tax Service. He also was the Management Broker for the V.A. and H.U.D. covering 12 surrounding counties for both for about 20 years. Oscar was a veteran of WWII. He was a member of Winston Lodge #167 of the Masons, a member of the York and Scottish Rites, and a member of Oasis Shrine and the Eastern Star. He also was a member of the Odd Fellows, the Winston-Salem Moose Lodge, and the Elks. He was a life member of the D.A.V, and the American Legion. A graveside service will be held at Forsyth Memorial Park 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 25, 2015 with Rev. E. Lee Ellis officiating. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Online condolences may be made at www.hayworth-miller.com.
