Opal Cahoon Weatherly, 83, died peacefully on April 9, 2010 with loved ones by her side at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. She was born August 8, 1926 in Kilkenny, North Carolina to Ollie Meekins Cahoon and Robert Bruce Cahoon. Mrs. Weatherly and her husband, Royce Raymond Weatherly were married on Feb. 21, 1948 in Nashville, North Carolina. Royce and Opal were married for 53 years. She was a beloved wife, mother, sister, daughter and grandmother. They settled in the town of Wake Forest where they worked at the college and were members of Wake Forest Baptist Church. The warmth and fellowship of this small community provided a rich framework to build their life in. They moved with the college to Winston-Salem in 1956 renovating an old farmhouse near campus and starting a family. In later years Opal Weatherly worked at the Law Library retiring in 1986. She was a gardener at heart, nurturing her family, cultivating friendships and enriching her community. Mrs. Weatherly is preceded in death by her husband Royce Raymond Weatherly Sr., her sister Ardie Denson of Rocky Mount and her 5 brothers Ira (Jip) Cahoon of Red Oak, NC Ray,Winston and Archie Cahoon of Portsmouth,VA and Robert Cahoon of Kilkenny, NC. Opal Weatherly is survived by her son Royce R. Weatherly Jr. and wife Lori N.C. Weatherly and their daughters Annabelle and Lola of Maplewood, NJ, daughter Marcia Weatherly-Barnes and husband Robert A. Barnes of Winston-Salem and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at Wait Chapel on the campus of Wake Forest University at 2pm on May 1. The family will receive friends after the service in the chapel's narthex.
