Mrs. Grace Opal Luffman Southard, 83, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours Monday, September 6, 2010 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home following complications from an accident. Opal was born in State Road, NC to Grady and Maude Luffman on February 27, 1927. She retired from Hanes Hosiery in 1987 after 30 years of service. Opal loved cultivating her vegetable garden and beautiful flowers and sharing the fruits of her labor and her knowledge with her family and friends. She was a skilled seamstress. She kept alive the art of quilting with her one-of-a-kind quilts that her hands lovingly created. She always had a candy dish close by to share with all the grandchildren and great grandchildren. Opal loved to travel to the beach. She couldn't pass by a yard sale and miss the chance to find a special discovery. Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband, George Southard, her brother, Clyde Wayne Luffman, her sister Helen Luffman Carter and John A. Hincher, Sr. Left here to cherish her memory are her children, Ruth Shouse (Douglas), Doris Tesh (Frank), Phyllis Hincher (Frank Greathouse), Janice Isenhour, Kay Hincher (Gregory Burridge) and John Hincher, Jr.; grandchildren, Donna Chanona, Dean Smith (Carrie), Frank Tesh, Jr. (Victoria), Melissa Cook, Jessica Burbridge (Oteil), Jaime Gossan (Wesley) and Jordan A. Shouse; great grandchildren, Jacob and Emma Chanona, Christian, Connor and Caroline Smith, Brooke, Nicholas, Roman and Noah Tesh, Andrew and Brandon Cook and a wonderful neighbor and friend, Donna Morgan. Also surviving are her brothers, Haston Luffman (Vassie), Bill Luffman (Nell), Arvil Luffman (Sue), Fred Luffman (Judy), Dwayne Luffman (Linda) and sister, Alma Jean Pardue (Kenneth). Visitation will be held from 11:00-12:00 on Wednesday, September 8, 2010 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. A private graveside service will follow. Memorials may be made to the Kate B.
