BARNES Mr. Obie Eugene Barnes, 84, of Winston-Salem, passed away Saturday, September 3, 2011 at his home. He was born August 6, 1927 in Forsyth County to Grover Cleveland and Ida Bessie Whitt Barnes. Obie was a devoted husband, father, Paw-Paw, and friend who will be greatly missed. He was a 1946 graduate of Mineral Springs High School and served in Korea in the U.S. Army from 1950-1952. He attended Waughtown Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses and was retired from Lucent Technologies (AT&T) with 41 years of service. Obie loved fishing, gardening, golfing, music, dancing, and was affectionately known as ""Jake, the Blues Man"" to many in N.C., S.C. and Va. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Harvey, Grady and James; and one sister, Ruby Martin. Surviving are his loving wife of 58 years, Helen Baity Barnes; two sons, Michael Barnes (Joanne) of Winston-Salem and Kent Barnes (Susan) of Yadkinville; four grandchildren, Kimberly Ellis (James), Cameron Barnes, Allison Barber (Brett) and Matthew Barnes; two great grandchildren, Annabelle Ellis and Casey Ellis; and one brother, Lee Barnes of Walkertown. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 9 at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens with Ministers John Pesenti and Alton Absher officiating. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel, and at other times at the home of Michael Barnes. The family wishes to express their thanks and appreciation to the Forsyth Medical Center 7th Floor Stroke Unit, Whitaker Rehab, and those who were very helpful and supportive at The Regency in Clemmons.
