WINSTON-SALEM, NC-Mrs. Norma Whitney McNeil, 88, of Winston-Salem, NC, passed away on Wednesday, July 8, 2015, at Winston-Salem Nursing and Rehabilitation. She was born on November 24, 1926 in Forsyth County, NC to the late M.C. Whitney and Mozelle Snider Whitney. Norma graduated from James A. Gray High School. In 1948 she received a B.S. Degree from the Woman's College of the University of North Carolina. Her first job was Department Manager at Sears Roebuck. She was a first grade teacher at the Sunnyside School and floor manager at Piece Goods. In 1980 she married Jesse McNeil. During this happy but brief marriage she enjoyed traveling with her husband, entertaining, watching baseball and basketball, and spoiling her grandchildren. In more recent years, she worked as a receptionist at Winston-Salem Barber School, a family-owned business. Norma was a member of Memorial Reformed Church and had the distinction of being the first woman to serve on the Church Consistory. An accomplished cook, she was known for her chicken pie, pound cakes and chess tarts. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse McNeil; one son, Jack Graham; brothers, Hoyt Whitney, Merle Whitney and Robert Whitney. Mrs. McNeil is survived by her grandchildren, Melissa Rice and husband, Ben, Catherine Graham and Nicholas Graham; one sister, Janice Dooley and husband, Tom; a sister-in-law, Evelyn West; and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, July 15, 2015 at Memorial Reformed Church. Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel is assisting the family of Mrs. McNeil.
